Risk Assessment and Mitigation
An essential step in the due diligence process is to identify the actual and potential human rights risks and impacts of operations. Carrying out a human rights risk and impact assessment cannot be a check the box exercise. If done correctly, it will support risk mitigation efforts essential to avoiding and addressing undesirable events that can disrupt operations and be costly in the long run.
We deploy an assessment methodology that has been tried and tested on four continents on projects across a range of industries. Working in close collaboration with our clients, we go with them into the field to validate the findings of our initial gap analysis with specific field-based assessment processes using local sources of information and data. The objective is to identify the potential human rights challenges facing our clients and to understand first-hand how their operations impact on rights-holders and are perceived by their key stakeholders. We assist clients with developing tailored risk mitigation strategies and recommendations to address each of the identified gaps and risk factors.
Identifying human rights risks must be an ongoing process. We offer ongoing monitoring of our clients’ operating environments to help them identify and prevent risks before they become a threat. Through our management consulting services, we can assist our clients with the creation of risk mitigation plans as well as the development of targeted risk management communication strategies to relevant internal and external stakeholders.
Our human rights risk and impact assessments are tailored to our clients’ needs and enable them to achieve and demonstrate compliance with requirements of key standards applicable to operations in complex environments.
