WEBINAR:  Human Rights Due Diligence in the Private Security Industry

With the unanimous endorsement of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights by the UN Human Rights Council in 2011, companies are increasingly being encouraged through laws, regulations, and voluntary commitments to ensure respect for human rights throughout their operations.

This webinar will explore one key element of the corporate responsibility to respect human rights, the need to conduct human rights due diligence. Through a human rights due diligence process companies can identify, prevent, mitigate, and account for how they address their human rights impacts. This process entails conducting a human rights risk assessment of actual and potential human rights impacts, integrating those findings into management systems, tracking effectiveness of responses, and communicating internally and externally how impacts are addressed. An adequate human rights due diligence process is particularly important for the security industry which operates in complex environments where human rights risks are greater due to lack of governance. A number of recently developed standards specifically applicable to security providers include human rights due diligence requirements.

This free webinar will examine those requirements and offer a case study of a corporate human rights risk assessment.

SPEAKER BIOS

Dr. Rebecca DeWinter-Schmitt, Senior Managing Director at Human Analytics, is an expert in business and human rights, in particular pertaining to the security and apparel sectors. She approaches fostering rights-respecting business practices from the perspectives of an academic, advocate, and practitioner. Currently, Dr. DeWinter-Schmitt is Co-Director of the Human Rights in Business Program, housed at the Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at American University’s Washington College of Law. From 1998-2002, she was a staff member of Amnesty International USA, and until 2012, she was an Assistant Professor at American University’s School of International Service’s Peace and Conflict Resolution Program. An active participant in various efforts to develop standards for the private security industry, until recently she represented the Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law in the civil society pillar of the International Code of Conduct Association, and currently chairs the U.S. Technical Advisory Group to the International Organization for Standardization committee developing an international standard for security services.

Sylvia White, General Counsel at Aegis, has worked for the company for 7 years and has been involved in the industry drive for increased regulation throughout that time. She has extremely broad responsibilities across the company and is a board member, as well as being responsible for all aspects of legal and regulatory compliance at Aegis, including commercial contractual matters (and the bidding function). She has been actively involved in the Security in Complex Environments Group in the UK, and the International Code of Conduct process, where she was a member of the temporary steering committee. Sylvia is a qualified lawyer with more than 15 years post qualification experience.
